What an amazing artist Nina Simone is. Writer, composer, singer, pianist, perfectionist and a powerful and influential campaigner for social and racial justice. She was a force of nature who did her own thing and lived her own life with all its struggles. Super confident in her own abilities as an artist. She has such a distinctive style, nobody sounds like Nina Simone. I’m not sure compromise was in her vocabulary. She held very strong values and beliefs which she paid a high price for keeping. Her live performances are mesmeric. Amazing raw power and presence on stage. There is a filmed live performance at Montreaux in 1976 and it is astonishing how threatening and intimidating on stage. I love one off’s and artists who do it their way. Not sure you get artists like Nina anymore. I love this image of her, which I think was taken in London in 1968. She looks absolutely incredible. So powerful, so strong like a Nubian Queen. Sadly no idea who the photographer was.
