F.C.Z.M ULTRAS, black, L/XL 23"p2p, 29"s2h, 34" c2c
This top measures 23” pit to pit (width), 29” shoulder to hem (length) and 34” edge of collar to end of cuff.
Some say it was January, some February and a small number even mid March 1979 when the inaugural extraordinary crisis meeting of the FC Zambeze Maraudeurs fanbase met. The gathering lasted 48 hours and quickly descended into chaos.
The self appointed fan leaders known as the Vandals had been in charge of the fanbase for a few years. They were influential with the club but many fans felt they had become too close to the hierarchy. You know what I mean. There was a growing feeling that they didn’t have the interests of the fans at heart anymore. Their songs and chants were crap as well. No originality. They couldn’t be arsed to produce any bootleg knock off fan merch either. They didn’t bother singing when F.C.Z.M went more than 2-up, many of the Vandals didn’t even attend games against some of the more inferior teams like Chingola Generals or Kitwe Rowdies. Amongst other F.C.Z.M fans the Vandals were viewed as poseurs.
Time for a revolution. Led by a group of fans who had been isolated by the Vandals a chap called Mwenge made an unforgettable intervention. He gave an inspiring and impassioned speech where he said in summary the Vandals were a waste of space, the definition of lacklustre, just liked the power and were generally a total bunch of ball-bags. The venue erupted. To prove a point Mwenge then made up a new fan song on the spot that ended with the words:
WE ARE FC ZAMBEZE MARAUDEURS
YOU QUAKE WHEN WE PLAY
WE ARE THE ULTRAS
WE WILL NEVER GO AWAY
WE ARE F.C.Z.M
THE LIONS OF ZAMBIA
WE ARE 100% SUPER
Powerful stuff. All the other fans started singing along.
A vote was taken immediately and Mwenge and his group were voted new leaders of the fanbase. They called themselves the ULTRAS which is the very first historical use of the word in this context.
The first thing Mwenge did was produce a fan bootleg sweat. He’d always wanted one. He had a mate who was a graphic designer so they created this design. It quickly sold out.
Anyway I remember seeing a picture of a fan wearing this top in a magazine a while ago so I had to print a few up as a tribute to F.C.Z.M ULTRAS.
Remember to always follow your dreams.
Hand screen printed on a preloved vintage black sweatshirt, with yellow eco ink.
