My Dad loved jazz, he used to make tea or bottle his home brew listening to Jazz Records Request on Radio 3 every Saturday afternoon. As a kid I used to help him and loved hearing all these new sounds. He had a decent collection of jazz records which I now own. He had some Trane, Dolphy, Mingus, Monk, MJQ loads of stuff and of course Miles. My Dad liked the classic Miles of the mid to late 50’s so it was mostly Milestones, Kind of Blue, Live at Carnegie Hall. From this I started to listen to other stuff and of course fell in love instantly with the fusion stuff. Is it jazz at all. Doesn’t really matter anyway. It’s just stunning music that sounds so mind-blowing. Of that amazing recording period my favourite record has to be On the Corner from 1972. It’s an incredible listen from start to finish. It’s like a mad embryonic proto hip hop. Its sounds so new. Every track is a killer but my fave is Black Satin. Every time I listen to it, it excites and makes me move. On The Corner got panned by the critics but what do they ever know. Check out On The Quarner by Stas Thee Boss which samples Black Satin and it’s stunning.
