Monday 5th July 1982 5.15pm was kick off of a football match that even though I was 10 going on 11 I think I remember like it was yesterday. Like most people I had fallen in love with the Brazil team over the previous matches. Their names still slip off the tongue. I don’t think I moved from the front of the TV for the next few hours. Watching expecting another amazing performance by Brazil who would obviously go on to win the World Cup.

It didn’t quite go like that. What a game. Two distinct styles. The pragmatism and caution of the Italians and the free, flamboyance, exuberance, joy etc etc of Brazil. It was good v evil. It felt like the soul of football was at stake. That Brazil team was pure and it felt like victory would ensure that football would remain the beautiful game. Sadly Brazil made a few defensive mistakes and were punished by Paulo Rossi. I think all three Italy goals came from mistakes. Brazil’s first goal was stunning with Zico and Socrates linking up. It really summed up their style. After Falcoa’s wonder strike at 2-2 Brazil would have qualified and gone into the semis to play Poland. In the 74th minute another mistake led to Rossi’s third goal and hat trick. It ended 3-2 and Brazil were out. I remember being shocked and so upset.

The rest of the tournament just didn’t feel the same. It was the day football died. O DIA EM QUE O FUTEBOL MORREU. I found loads of stills from the match so printed up a top to remember this awful day.
