I only heard about Betty Davis through listening to Miles fusion period. I was reading about this massive shift in musical direction and how influential his then wife Betty was in turning him onto new sounds such as Jimi Hendrix and Sly and the Family Stone. I had to give Betty a listen. WOW what a sound. It blew me away. The voice, the look, the funk, the groove. It sounds dirty. It sounds like you wouldn’t mess with her. I couldn’t believe why I hadn’t heard of Betty Davis before. She was strong, independent and knew her own mind. Betty was an artist. She didn’t suffer fools. She was well ahead of her time. The record company didn’t know how to ‘sell’ her. She made three fab albums in the early-mid 1970s (Betty Davis, They Say I’m Different and Nasty Gal) which failed to find much of an audience or trouble the charts. Thankfully these records have been reissued on vinyl in the last few years. Disillusioned by the music business she pretty much finished her career and became a recluse. It’s crazy to think that’s how it ended. You can’t help think if she was an artist today she would be a mega-star. Betty Davis died aged 77 in 2022.
